Abstract


ABSTRACTOral health is maintained by preventing the formation of dental plaque which is the main cause of dental caries.Gargling with steeping green betel leaf or black tea is an alternative for maintaining dental health. The purposeof the study was to assess the potential effects of gargling with daun sirih and black tea in reducing dental plaqueindex.Research was conducted with post-test only control group design, using 45 subjects. The subjects were dividedinto 3 groups (n = 15). Group I, II, and III, were treated by gargling with steeping green betel leaf, steepingblack tea, and water respectively. The data measured by dental plaque index with O’Leary method. Data of thepercentage of dental plaque index was analyzed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey HSD test, α = 0,05 level. Significancebased on the value of P <0,05.The study showed that the mean plaque index of group I and II are 38,56 %and 42,92% respectively, and significantly differ (p < 0,01) to the third group (65,50 %). Dental plaque indexof group I (38,56 %) and group II(42,92 %) showed no significant difference (P>0,05). The study conclude thatgargling with daun sirih steeping green and black tea steeping lowering effect of dental plaque index in equalpotency.

ABSTRAKKesehatan gigi dan mulut perlu dijaga dengan cara mencegah pembentukan plak gigi yang merupakan penyebabutama terjadinya karies gigi. Berkumurdenganseduhandaun sirih hijau atau teh hitam merupakanalternatif untuk menjaga kesehatan gigi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menilai efek dan potensi berkumur denganseduhan daun sirih hijau dan teh hitam dalam menurunkan indeks plak gigi.Desain penelitian adalaheksperimental sungguhan dengan post test only control group; penelitian menggunakan 45 subjek penelitianyang dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok (n=15). Kelompok I, II, dan III masing-masing berkumur dengan seduhandaun sirih hijau, seduhan teh hitam, dan air putih. Data yang diukur adalah indeks plak gigi dengan metodeO’Leary. Analisis data persentase indeks plak gigi menggunakan ANOVA, dilanjutkan uji Tukey HSD, α = 0,05.Kemaknaan berdasarkan nilai p< 0,05.Rerata indeks plak gigi kelompok I dan II berturut-turut 38,56% dan42,92%,berbeda sangat bermakna (p<0,01) dengan kelompok III yaitu sebesar 65,50%. Indeks plak gigi darikelompok I (38,56 %) dan kelompok II (42,92 %) tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang bermakna (p>0,05).Berkumur dengan seduhan daun sirih hijau dan seduhan teh hitam berefek menurunkan indeks plak gigi denganpotensi yang setara.
