Abstract


ABSTRACTThe use of artemisinin tends to increase due to WHO regulation that stated of artemisinin as ArtemisininbasedCombination Therapies (ACTs) for anti-malarial drug. So far, artemisinin production still rely onthe cultivation of Artemisia annua as the plant source of artemisinin. Seedling have been known play animportant role in the production as well as the artemisinin content of Artemisia annua. The study on thelife storage, effect of temperature and light of Artemisia annua seed viability was conducted in order toknow the viability of the seed. The seed was kept for 22 months both in 24oC room temperature and in therefrigerator (4 C), and it was observed every month for its physical change and viability. The seed wasgerminated in the dark and light condition. The study showed that seed kept in the room temperature(24oC) have the low viability of (3,78%) after 12 months, while the seed kept in the refrigetaor stillhave the high viability of (85%) for 21 months. For the germination, Artemisia seed tends to need lightcondition rather than in the dark condition. The dark condition could decrease the viability of Artemisiaseed up to 53.74%.

 

ABSTRAKKebutuhan Artemisinin sebagai obat untuk penyembuhan malaria semakin meningkat seiring denganditetapkannya Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs) oleh WHO. Sejauh ini cara yang palingekonomis untuk mendapatkan bahan adalah melalui budidaya Artemisia annua L. Keberhasilanbudidaya sangat ditunjang oleh penyediaan bibit yang bermutu, yang pada gilirannya menuntutketersediaan benih yang berkualitas. Untuk itu dilakukan penelitian pengaruh umur simpan, suhudan cahaya terhadap daya perkecambahan benih A. annua L. Percobaan ini menggunakan rancanganAcak Lengkap. Benih disimpan selama 22 bulan pada suhu ruangan dan lemari pendingin (12°C),serta dikecambahkan pada kondisi gelap dan terang. Setiap bulan diamati perubahan fisik dan dayakecambahnya. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa benih kehilangan daya kecambah (d.k.) setelah disimpanselama 12 bulan pada suhu ruangan (d.k.: 3,78%), sedangkan penyimpanan pada lemari pendinginwalaupun telah menunjukkan penurunan d.k. benih masih cukup tinggi (85%) selama penyimpananselama 21 bulan. A. annua L. dalam perkecambahannya memerlukan adanya cahaya. Tidak adanyacahaya dapat menurunkan d.k.hingga 53,74%. Umur simpan benih A. annua L. semakin pendekdengan adanya hama yang menyerang benih selama penyimpanan.Kata kunci: artemisinin, obat anti-malarial, Artemisia annua L.
